As the winter kicks in, it can be useful to have a few short races to keep you ticking over until the big stuff comes around again next year.
The Feet First Mizuno Winter Series 5k has reached its third race, taking place in Killarney, Co Kerry on Saturday. Registration is just €8 on the day. See feetfirst.ie
However, if you're in the mood for something a bit more challenging in Kerry, then Sunday's Run the Gauntlet should fit the bill. It's a half marathon through the Gap of Dunloe and back – and the website asks "are you tough enough?" just to make it sound intimidating. There are even extra special T-shirts for those who finish under 1 hour 45 minutes and two hours, although at €50 an entry, you'd want shorts, socks and a bobble hat thrown in with that.
