Medical elections: The candidates for election as members of the Medical Council were announced yesterday. Six of the 12 medical members will be elected by the profession.
Candidates will be elected in six categories, including obstetrics and gynaecology, pathology or radiology, public health medicine and anaesthesia.
All registered doctors can vote on medicalcouncil.iebetween 12 noon, next Monday, March 4th, and 12 noon on Friday, March 15th.
Mind your head: Minister for Mental Health, Kathleen Lynch, yesterday launched Mind Your Head, a DVD aimed at helping those working with young people talk about mental health issues.
Designed for youth workers, youth leaders, peer educators and others in response to needs expressed by young people around mental health and self-harm, the programme covers issues including exam stress, image and financial stress as well as depression and drug abuse. See hse.ie
Russian ban: Russia will ban smoking in many public places from June under a law central to President Vladimir Putin's plans to make citizens healthier, raise life expectancy and help the economy.
Under the law, smoking will gradually be banned at work, in the subway, restaurants, cafes, ships and long-distance trains in a nation with one of the world’s top smoking rates.The legislation will also restrict cigarette sales and ban advertising and sponsorship of events by tobacco companies.
