Orthopaedics: Stephen Kearns, registrar specialising in orthopaedics at the James Connolly Memorial Hospital, Blanchardstown, Dublin, has received acclaim for his research paper into the prevention of Compartment Syndrome using vitamin C. Kearns's research paper was deemed the best of 23 at a meeting of the British Orthopaedic Research Society in Belfast. Teeth: Less than half of all Irish children brush their teeth more than once a day. More than 75 per cent eat sweets and chocolates daily and over 60 per cent consume a soft drink every day. Irish dentists are not pleased with these figures and have launched a new booklet to encourage Irish children to look after their teeth better. Entitled, The Magic Tooth, it is available free in health centres, schools and public libraries.
Fertility: A new reusable clinically tested home fertility test has just been launched on the Irish market. Called, Maybe Baby, it is a mini microscope on which a saliva sample (taken before breakfast) is placed. The user can then check her fertile/infertile days according to the pattern created by the saliva on the microscope. Maybe Baby is available in pharmacies for £45.
