Ella McSweeney is presenter of Ear to the Groundon RTÉ 1, on Tuesdays at 8.30pm
Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?
I don’t really know – it’s all relative. When I see the incredible physicality of farming work I feel very under par. In general, I’m extremely active. I recently left my desk job in lovely RTÉ radio which brought about lots of physical change, for which I’m thankful. I’m lucky to have a job that takes me outside.
How often do you exercise?
I’ve taken up swimming during the week although I’m just terrible at it. I hate being under water and refuse, child-like, to put my head below the waterline for longer than about two seconds. I am a wimp! I’m going to get some swimming lessons to get over it.
Do you get your five a day?
I get about 20 a day! If I could have one fruit, it would be grapefruit, I lov ethe tangy taste. As my birthday falls on Halloween, I love mandarins and satsumas which are available around that time.
Do you worry?
Yes, but sometimes it’s hard to know what is little and what is big when you’re in the moment. Listening to music helps, as does yoga. If I’m feeling worried or under strain I do one of two things – I take exercise or I go for a nap. Everything is okay after that.
What do you do to relax?
Immersing myself in the sea is a cure for everything. Also, a few years ago I bought something very expensive and indulgent: a Tempur mattress. I figured if it lasts for 15 years, that’s five cent a night for the blissful pleasure of incredible sleep. Being around animals relaxes me. I’m getting pigs soon – they will provide lots of fun when alive, and yummy dinners after I kill and cure them.
What’s your unhealthiest habit?
I’m not a big drinker, but I suppose it would have to be alcohol. I did have a slightly weird moment the other day when I looked at the clock (which read 5.10pm) and wondered guiltily if it was too early for a gin and tonic. At least there’s a lemon in there.
