LIFESTYLE Q&A:Aonghus McAnally, presenter with RTÉ Radio 1

Do you think you have a healthy lifestyle?

In general terms, yes. I am a non-smoker and non-drinker and my diet is pretty good. I have hereditary high cholesterol, so I have to mind that. I don’t eat red meat as a rule and always opt for the fish option when out.

How often do you exercise?

I used to go to the gym twice a week and played golf for many years, but I have stopped in recent years, blaming lack of time for both. I suppose we all make time to do the things we feel are important in life, so my new year’s resolution is to take more exercise. It can be hard after battling through rush-hour traffic to turn around and head out again, but maybe it has to be done.

Do you get your five a day?

Absolutely. Breakfast is muesli and tea, I eat from the salad bar every day in the RTÉ canteen for lunch (and I have managed to do so throughout the winter) and we always have a large fruit bowl at home.

Do you worry?

No more than everyone else. The present financial climate is certainly adding to the overall worry of life but I am a great believer in the phrase, “Keep on keeping on!”

My two boys now have their own lives to live, so I probably worry more for them.

What do you do to relax?

My big passion now is snooker and billiards. I am thrilled to be on the Irish billiards team and have recently fulfilled a life-long ambition to actually have my own table in the house. I never go out now!

What’s your unhealthiest habit?

Occasionally, I lose my resolve and dig into a chicken tikka masala or a huge bag of wine gums, but other than not getting enough exercise, that’s about it.
