As I belted out the door to a spin class in the gym recently, my four-year-old asked me what people did there.

“You pedal really fast and hard on a bike while music plays, but you don’t go anywhere,” I explained.

In short, spin offers a great workout in a relatively short time – although it can feel an eternity when you are in the saddle.

If you are an aficionado, you’ll know it’s a calorie furnace, and anything that makes your lungs and leg muscles scream that much has to pay off this summer when you are in your shorts.

So if you haven’t tried it, or you’ve let the classes lapse, get into the saddle and start cranking up the resistance – no cheating down the back.

The usual caveats apply: get clearance from your doctor if needed – this is not a walk in the park – and bring a towel and loads of water.
