If you do one thing this week... stretch yourself at work
NOW THAT Christmas is well and truly over and the snow has thawed, it’s back to the regular grind of work. But if that means you are seated for long periods, don’t let your back and neck suffer: you can prevent and relieve stiffness in desk-bound muscles by doing quick stretches during the working day. It doesn’t have to involve donning lycra and clearing a space in the middle of the office though. Instead it can be as simple as doing gentle neck-rolls and stretching out your back, shoulders, forearms and hands while sitting.
Hold each stretch for about 15 seconds, and if you feel any pain, stop.
If it’s likely to slip your mind, you can set a reminder on your computer or phone, or stretch just before or after regular coffee breaks or meetings.
The Mayo Clinic offers a series of video clips showing a range of suitable exercises, see www.mayoclinic.com/health/office-stretches/MY00921
