Legal proceedings by the Revenue Commissioners against former Taoiseach Mr Charles J. Haughey will be heard in camera at Dublin Circuit Court on April 4th.
Mr Haughey faces a tax bill thought to be in the region of £1 million, based on payments to the former Taoiseach revealed by the McCracken tribunal. The case will be a rehearing of the original Revenue assessment, which was quashed by an appeals commissioner in late 1998 after Mr Haughey's lawyers argued that the identity of his benefactors had not been proved.
The decision to reduce Mr Haughey's liability to nil caused a controversy at that time, especially after the Opposition revealed that the appeals commissioner involved, Mr Ronan Kelly, was a brother-in-law of the Taoiseach, Mr Ahern.
