Guerin's husband hopes death `not in vain'

THE husband of murdered journalist Veronica Guerin has said he hopes her death was not 113 vain

THE husband of murdered journalist Veronica Guerin has said he hopes her death was not 113 vain. In an interview on the RTE Radio News at One yesterday, Mr Graham Turley said these were the sentiments expressed in every card and message he had received.

"I just hope so. It's a very funny thing to say that I hope somebody takes up the crusade. It's not, to me, a crusade. It's something that we wanted to get to the end of.

"If there is a change in policy or the bail laws, or whatever it is, I think then she will have achieved something."

Mr Turley said he had not thought about his wife's killers, as he was focused on "one little seven year old", their son Cathal.

Asked whether he thought her killers would be caught, he said it was difficult to say. "I would love to think that somebody will pay for it on the long term. Or that something can be done in connection with why Veronica was assassinated in such a horrible way.

"I would like to think that somebody, some day, is going to be locked up for it and properly locked up, not for a small period of time and then it's back out on the road. This is where the law would have to be changed."

The pre-recorded interview replaced all the usual items on the news programme. Mr Turley had approached presenter Sean O'Rourke, a family friend, at the funeral and suggested the interview.

He said he wanted to thank everyone for the cards, flowers, letter and tributes. "It's not that Veronica had loads of friends. She had very, very few enemies."
