In a bid to raise awareness about the sweatshop conditions in which millions of people around the world work, the Greens are calling on young people to block out brand names.

Eamon Ryan, Dublin South TD, said the idea is to put out the message that young people can be stylish without slogans, but he stressed it was not an exercise in telling people what to do.

"Instead it is encouraging students to ask questions about where their clothes come from, where their money goes to and what sort of peer pressure young people are put under to wear the right thing," he said.

Today is also the closing date for the No Logo Day Style Wars competition, which asks students to design and create an outfit for less than €25.

"We have already received a huge response to the competition and we will be announcing the winners in a few weeks time," added Mr Ryan.
