The Green Party has launched its plans for the proposed new Dublin Metro line which include proposals to extend the line to Swords in north Dublin and to Bray in Co Wicklow.

Outlining the new plan, Green Party leader Mr Trevor Sargent criticised the Government for what he called its inability to deliver a decent public transport system.

"As it stands there is little interest or no understanding among the public as to how this new Metro system will work," he said.

The party has launched the plan for their preferred route out of concern that international financiers will choose a metro route which has good short term revenue returns but which would not insure the proper long term planning of the city.

The Green Party is proposing that the State take a majority equity stake in any consortium that is set up to build and operate the Metro.

"We feel that a consortium which included the Irish people as a major equity partner would have the benefits of private sector experience while also insuring that the Irish taxpayer gets the best value for money," said Green Party Transport spokesperson Cllr Eamon Ryan.

The Green Party plans include extensions to Bray and Swords, citing that these would improve the overall economic viability of the line.

It also outlines six kilometres of underground line from near Dunville Avenue in Ranelagh with stations every at Harcourt Station, Stephens Green, Tara St, The Rotunda and Broadstone. The completion of the inner-city underground rail connector would link the Sligo rail line to Heuston station with stops at Spenser Dock, Pearse Street, St Stephen's Green and the Liberties.

The route would connect the four mainline rail lines into the city and would allow for services from Naas to Howth and from Bray to Blanchardstown.
