Former president of the USSR, Mr Mikhail Gorba-chev, is to receive the freedom of the city of Dublin.
Dublin City Council said it was granting the honour "in recognition of his contribution to democracy, world peace and his work for openness and reform both in the Soviet Union and in Eastern Europe".
Mr Gorbachev is expected to visit Dublin in January to receive the honour.
