Ireland had a good day in the European bridge team championships yesterday with a tied match in the women’s event 15-15 against medal contenders the Netherlands, writes Séamus Dowling in Ostend. The same team had a victory over Denmark 16-14, before going down 11-19 to Israel.

With one round of matches remaining, France leads on 480 points from the Netherlands, 479, Sweden, 476, Germany, 473, and England. The leading four will meet lowly placed teams in the last round.

Meanwhile, the youngest competitor in the championships in Ostend, Niamh Gormally (16), partnering her grandmother Kay Downes, has qualified for the B final.

The championships end today.
