More than £15 million has been given to 41 charities in the Limerick region following last year's J.P. McManus Pro-Am 2000 at Limerick Golf Club.

The largest amount, £3.9 million, was paid to the Mid-Western Hospitals Development Trust to help pay for an oncology unit and radiography services used in cancer treatment.

The £15,425,000 was raised through the £40,000 fee which teams paid to play in last July's competition, held every five years, and by the auction held at the Adare Manor Hotel.

Last year's event, which had a £400,000 prize fund, attracted Tiger Woods and other top golf professionals, including Robert Allenby, Mark O'Meara, David Duval and Lee Janzen.

It is the third time the event has been held at Limerick Golf Club, one of the oldest in the world. In 1995, £2.9 million was raised and in 1990 more than £1 million.

From this year's fund, £1.5 million was paid to Limerick Youth Service for a new centre for the education and training of disadvantaged young people. The Milford Hospice in Castletroy received £1 million for a new project which includes a daycare centre for the elderly.

Boys Hope, a US-based charity, will also be building a centre in Limerick. It provides a haven for boys with unsettled backgrounds, for which it received £550,000. St Gabriel's School, an education and treatment centre for children with cerebral palsy, received £500,000.

The Desmond Complex in Newcastlewest, which is building a daycare centre in conjunction with the Rathfredagh Cheshire Home, also received £500,000.
