A Waterford schoolgirl who received laser burns when treated by a plastic surgeon for a port wine mark on her face was awarded £99,800 damages by the High Court.

Aileen Tobin (16), of Orchard Drive, Ursuline Court, Waterford, was treated by Dr Matt McHugh at St James's Hospital, Dublin, in June 1994. Next day, the court was told, the girl's face was bleeding.

When the case came for hearing a fortnight ago, liability was conceded by the defendant. Yesterday Mr Justice Kelly awarded £60,000 for pain and suffering in the future and £20,000 for pain and suffering in the past, with £19,800 in special damages.
