Four people were killed in accidents around the State yesterday.
Three men were killed last night in an accident in Co Meath involving a Fiat van and an articulated lorry, while a two-year-old girl drowned yesterday afternoon in a Co Clare leisure centre.
It is believed that icy road conditions may have played a role in the road accident which happened at Moyvalley on the N4 between Clonard and Enfield, near Mother Hubbard's restaurant.
A car and an articulated lorry collided at about 7 p.m. resulting in the deaths of three men. All three who died had been travelling in the car.
They died at the scene of the accident and their bodies were taken by the emergency services to the James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.
A two-year-old girl drowned yesterday in a swimming pool at a hotel in Ennis, Co Clare, when she got into difficulty. The accident happened yesterday afternoon when the girl was with her father and brother.
Gardai said the girl drowned at the West County Hotel leisure centre at around 3.40 p.m. An ambulance was called and the girl was taken to Ennis General Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 4.20 p.m. yesterday. It is understood the young girl, from the east Clare village of O'Callaghan's Mills, was at the centre with her father and brother. The leisure centre includes a gym, a 20-metre swimming pool and a pool for children. Last night the group operations manager at Lynch Hotels, which owns the West County, Mr Brian Harrington, issued a statement.
He said: "This is a terrible tragedy. We are very shocked and our thoughts are with the little girl's family at this time. An investigation is under way."
