MEXICO CITY - A fire swept through a shanty town in south west Mexico City early yesterday, killing a five year old girl and destroying the cardboard homes of 300 families, reports said.

Dozens of survivors suffered burns as makeshift houses in the Corpus Cristi district were enveloped in flames, the state owned news agency Notimex said. Around 2,000 people were left homeless.
