A call for the establishment of a single authority to manage the water supply in the greater Dublin area has been made by the Labour Party's spokesman on the environment, Mr Eamon Gilmore TD.

Given the population density, he said, the greater Dublin area could no longer depend on surface water as the main form of supply. Surface water, obtained from rivers, was determined by rainfall levels. Work should be undertaken to explore other supply options, particularly that of ground water. A single water authority would be better positioned to take the lead in this work, he said.
