German Chancellor Gerhard Schoeder said today Germany had decided to help France politically on EU farm reform but that France had also modified its position.

"We understand that France needs time to explain the changesto its farmers," he added.

French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin on Thursday saidGermany largely shared France's position resisting many measures in a proposed overhaul of the European Union's subsidy-laden farm regime.

The 15 EU ministers late yesterday decided to suspend thetalks on the controversial Common Agriculture Policy reform, to reconvene next Tuesday.
