German police are to send descriptions of criminal suspects, stolen vehicles and missing persons in mobile phone text messages to bus and taxi drivers, federal police have announced.
The short-message-service (SMS) texts will also be sent out to certain public employees in a bid to track down criminals and missing persons faster, said police chief Ulrich Kersten.
"The rapid involvement of certain professions offers new perspectives for cooperation between the police and the public and increases our chances of solving crimes fast," Kersten said.
If the idea proves effective in a pilot scheme by 10 police forces it will be extended across the whole of Germany, he added.
