Tbilisi - Hundreds of protesters gathered in the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, yesterday to call for a transparent investigation into the murder of one of the former Soviet republic's best-known journalists.

Georgi Sanaya (25), a newsreader at the independent Rustavi-2 national television station and a political chat show host, was found shot dead at his apartment late on Thursday after he failed to report to work.

President Eduard Shevardnadze has said he does not believe the killing was political, but that nothing is being ruled out.
