Miami - Hurricane Georges, a relentless storm that has killed at least 241 people on a five-day trek through the Caribbean, made its US landfall yesterday. The eye of the hurricane struck Key West with 100 m.p.h. winds and a tidal surge that swamped piers, boats and beaches.
Millions of people on Florida's crowded south-east coast breathed more easily yesterday as the storm edged west overnight, sparing Miami and Fort Lauderdale its greatest impact.
