The former assistant Dublin city and county manager was convicted earlier this month on tax charges, but that is only the start of it.

Redmond spent his entire working career in local government and for decades knew everyone in Dublin planning. He was the man to turn to if you were a builder in need of advice, or a politician trying to swing a favour. In return, he received presents and small payments in the early days of his career, substantial and regular payoffs later on.

Redmond is to come under the direct scrutiny of the tribunal from next month. We know he got £2,000 from Liam Conroy, former chief executive of JMSE, and £25,000 from Gogarty, former managing director of the same company.

On retirement, he got a £10,000 "thank you" from Tom Roche of National Toll Roads. Then there were the years of regular payments from the builder Tom Brennan, amounting to about £50,000 over a decade. Brennan told the tribunal this was money won on horses.

The bets were placed using Brennan's own money.

Gardai reckon Redmond received well over £1 million in payments over his 40-year career, including substantial payments from at least one Fianna Fail politician and several other builders and businessmen.
