With all the rain this season, flagstones and paving (especially that made from recycled brick) can be dangerously slippery. A light sprinkling of sand should help to make these surfaces safer. Some gardeners scrub patios and paths with bleach or other chemicals to get rid of moss and algae, but it always grows back. Keep off the lawns and borders when they are wet, as both roots and soil creatures have difficulty making their way through compacted earth. Likewise, stay off the grass when it is frosty. And gardeners who like to dig their beds and borders during the winter should do it only when the soil is relatively dry.
