A new investigation into the death of John Carthy, who was shot dead by the Garda last year in Abbeylara, Co Longford, today announced a list of witnesses it intends to interview.

The joint Oireachtas sub-committee chaired by Fianna Fáil TD Mr Seán Ardagh will formally commence its investigation next Tuesday. It has the power to compel witnesses to give evidence under oath.

The purpose of the investigation, according to the committee chairman, "is to consider the official [Garda] report and determine if there outstanding matters of public interest."

The committee intends to sit for 10 days over three weeks and will listen to evidence from relatives and friends of Mr Carthy, the garda at the scene and senior officials involved in the compiling of the report. Officials from the Department of Justice will also be called regarding Garda procedures.

As part of its investigation the committee will visit the scene of the killing at Toneymore near Abbeylara, Co Longford, next Wednesday.

The sub-committee comprises Dáil deputies Ms Monica Barnes, Ms Marian McGennis, Mr Alan Shatter, Mr Brendan Howlin, Mr Michael Moynihan and Senator Denis O'Donovan. It will be chaired by Mr Ardagh.

A report by Garda Commissioner Mr Pat Byrne was submitted to the Department of Justice last June but after a motion by both houses of the Oireachtas, the report was referred to the Joint Committe on Justice, Equality, Defence and Women's Rights who set up the sub-committee.

Mr Carthy died after a 25-hour siege, when he was shot by Garda marksmen after he emerged from his home armed with a rifle.
