Temple Bar Gallery and Studios said the work was stolen from the gallery on the evening of November 21st.

It was part of a large group exhibition at the gallery, entitled Winter Salon, and had been produced by the Kildare-based artist specifically for the exhibition.

The painting is oil on canvas, measures 25cm x 25cm and is a landscape depicting a flooded field of crops with a row of trees in the background, the gallery said.

It urged other gallery owners, exhibition venues and auction houses to be extra vigilant about security on their premises.

The gallery asked anyone with information to contact gardaί at Pearse Street in Dublin.

Born in Worcester in 1949, Martin Gale moved to Ireland at a young age and graduated from the National College of Art and Design in 1973. He is a member of Aosdána.
