The Garda Air Support Unit and Garda Technical Bureau sniffer dogs assisted the team of five divers to examine the scene in the Clondalkin area.

Mr White has been missing since last Sunday morning when he and a friend, Shane Coughlan, left a house party at 4.30am to buy cigarettes and phone credit at a nearby Esso filling station.

Garda divers later recovered the body of Mr Coughlan, 18, from the Grand Canal last Wednesday. A post mortem established that he died from drowning.

Gardai began searching the area when shoes similar to those worn by Mr Coughlan were found at the Fonthill Road Bridge section of the Canal.

The search will be extended today to the area between the 11th and 12th locks. Garda Supt John Hartnett confirmed last night that two witnesses had come forward and were helping officers with their enquiries.

But he added: "There is nothing to suggest that there is anything suspicious in what has happened here."

The witnesses said they spotted the pair at between 7.30am and 8am last Sunday around the Ninth Lock Road near the Esso garage.

This sighting is least an hour after David called his brother Paul at 6.30am but left no message.
