A man was being questioned at Newbridge Garda station last night in connection with a serious assault on another man in the Co Kildare town early yesterday.
The victim of the attack, which happened on Main Street shortly before 2 a.m., is being treated for head injuries at Naas General Hospital.
A 27-year-old was arrested during the afternoon in the Newbridge area.
He was taken to the local Garda station, where he was being questioned last night under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows him to be held for up to 12 hours.

The condition of the injured man was described by a hospital spokeswoman as critical.
