Gardaí have urged drivers to exercise caution over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend.
The warning comes ahead of their road safety operation over the holiday, which will focus mainly on drink driving and speeding offences. Checkpoints will be mounted throughout the country.
Last October, five people died and 137 were injured over the bank holiday weekend. A total of 324 people were arrested for drink driving offences.
Gardaí are also reminding drivers that using mobile phones while driving is illegal and is a penalty point offence. More than 260 notices for this offence are issued every week.
