The Garda Ombudsman Commission has been asked to investigate an incident in north Dublin today involving gardai and the Emergency Response Unit (ERU).

A Garda statement said gardai in Swords were called to an incident at Swords Business Park at 3.30pm when a man had threatened self-harm.

"A Garda critical incident management was put in place and was atteneded by various sections of An Garda Siochana including a negotiating team and members of the Emergency Response Unit," the statement said.

The man was overpowered by gardai at 9pm, but inflicted injury on himself in the course of this.

"The man has been removed to hospital where he is being treated for his injuries which are not thought to be life threatening. No other person was injured. Investigations are on-going."

The Garda Ombudsman Commission has been contacted, the statement said.
