Gardaí in Limerick have begun a murder inquiry following the discovery of the body of a man (23) this morning.

The man was found in the College Avenue area of the Moyross estate by a passer-by at about 6.30 a.m.

He is believed to have sustained an "obvious wound" to his head but investigations are ongoing, with the Gardai awaiting an official report from State Pathologist, Dr Maire Cassidy.

It is believed that the man is local and may have been attacked when returning home after a night out.

While a connection to the recent violence on the Moyross Estate has not been ruled out Gardai are exploring a number of possible motives for the killing.
