Galwegians produced a remarkable surge to propel themselves from eighth position to top spot in the AIB League Division One today, as Ballymena failed to take their chance to claim it for themselves.

A late try by Belfast Harlequins was not enough for Andre Bester's charges to take down Galwegians after their visitors ran out concincing 24-14 winnersBlackrock College tried to do their Dublin neighbours, Clontarf, a favour at Stadbrook this afternoon beating Ballymena 22 - 19. But a spirited second-half comeback from the northerners saw them earn a bonus point and rise narrowly above Clontarf.

Trailing 15 - 3 at half-time, Ballymena rallied with 16 unanswered points, knowing victory would allow them to displace Clontarf at the top. And despite the last score of the game coming from 'Rock in the shape of a converted try. The men in black scored three tries earning a bonus point, keeping them in second after Galwegians' surge.

Up north, a last-minute Mark Armstrong penalty gave Dungannon a one-point win over fellow strugglers St Marys.
