Galway council workers attempt to stop landslide

Gaway County Council workers are attempting to stem the flow of a landslide in the Derrybrien area of the county.

Gaway County Council workers are attempting to stem the flow of a landslide in the Derrybrien area of the county.

Council workers erected barriers as a flow of peat and soil, detected yesterday, caused the closure of the main road linking Derrybrien with Loughrea.

Residents affected by recent landslides in Derrybrien have called for a public inquiry into building work carried out on the site of a proposed windfarm on the Slieve Aughty Mountains.

Yesterday's landslide, which breached two dams erected by the council, was the second to affect the area in ten days.

Mr Martin Collins of the Derrybrien Concerned Residents' Association, a resident's group set up in the wake of the landslides, has called for a public inquiry into the development on the Slieve Aughty Mountains.

Work was suspended last week on the 71-turbine windfarm last week after 60 contractors had to be evacuated from the area.

ESB subsidiary, Hibernian Wind Energy, the company building the windfarm, said investigations were continuing into the original landslide.
