Two teenage girls have been arrested after a 17-year-old Limerick girl was killed and a youth was seriously injured last night in Limerick City when they were struck by a stolen car.
A 16-year-old boy, from the southside of the city, was arrested this morning in connection with the incident. He is still being questioned.
The girl who died was named this afternoon as Miss Tanya Noonan, from the Moyross area of Limerick City.
The incident happened at about 11.30 p.m. while she was walking with friends off Mulgrave Street.
A black Honda Civic which had been stolen a short time earlier and containing a group of youths spun out of control and hit them.
Tanya was pronounced dead at Limerick Regional Hospital, while her 18-year-old companion was being treated for his injuries, which were not life-threatening.
The deputy State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy, is carrying out a postmortem today.
Gardaí said the car was travelling at high speed when it struck the group. The driver lost control while trying to round a slight bend. The occupants abandoned the car and fled into nearby streets.
Gardaí at Roxboro Garda Station are appealing for witnesses.
