Mourners gathered today at the funeral of Anna Politkovskaya, a prominent reporter and critic of President Vladimir Putin.

Politkovskaya (48) was shot dead on Saturday at her apartment block in central Moscow in a killing prosecutors linked to her work.

She won prominence in Russia for her strong defence of human rights and criticism of the government's policies - in particular its brutal war against separatists in Chechnya.

Dozens of Ms Politkovskaya's colleagues, public figures and admirers of her work gathered at Troyekurovskoye cemetery in western Moscow. No high-ranking Russian officials could be seen at the ceremony.

Many politicians and colleagues of the journalist have described her murder as a political murder, although views differ widely over who might have been behind it.

Mourners were waiting to file past the coffin with Ms Politkovskaya's body, which will be on display in a Soviet-era building at the cemetery before her burial.

Politkovskaya's death drew condemnation from world leaders, including US President Bush, and international organisations who demanded a thorough investigation.

Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to Dresden, the east German city where he served as a KGB agent in the 1980s, for talks with Chancellor Angela Merkel in which Ms Politkovskaya's death will be mentioned.

Mr Putin has limited his public reaction to promising Mr Bush in a telephone conversation on Monday that an "objective investigation" would be held.
