Frizzante gave trainer James Fanshawe and jockey Johnny Murtagh their second Group One success of the week with victory in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket today.

The five-year-old mare, who started at 14-1, came with a tremendous late surge to foil 100-1 outsider Ashdown Express.

Balmont, having his first run of the season, was a good third at 25-1.

Fanshawe and Murtagh are in irresistible form, having captured the Falmouth Stakes with Soviet Song on Tuesday.

American raider Exceed And Excel was quickly out of the stalls and led from Patavellian.

However, the complexion of the race changed dramatically from the furlong pole when Ashdown Express made his bid for glory in the hands of Seb Sanders.

However, Frizzante would not be denied and got the upper hand in the last 50 yards to win by a neck. Balmont was two lengths further away in third.

Murtagh told Channel 4: "She's great and has improved all season. The rain came last night and just took the sting out of the ground. She quickened up well from a bad draw and I think she was a deserved winner.

"She's got a good turn of foot and the ground was ideal.

"I was drawn wide, missed the kick and came across. I thought I was a bit too far back at one stage but she got me out of trouble."
