Strasbourg - The leaders of France and Germany met in Strasbourg last night in an attempt to improve the strained relationship between their two countries, Denis Staunton reports.

There was no formal agenda for the meeting but the German Chancellor, Mr Gerhard Schroder, President Jacques Chirac of France and the French Prime Minister, Mr Lionel Jospin, were seeking common ground in their approach to the future shape of the EU.
