EVER FANCIED tasting pigeon pie? Or getting up close and personal with Waterford’s rare goats? If so, then this year’s National Heritage Week should be of interest.

Up to 1,000 free events will be held around the country from August 22nd-30th, co-ordinated by the Heritage Council. The pigeon pie will be on offer at Kerry County Museum as it focuses on food in the Middle Ages during a lecture and food-tasting event on August 29th. A full medieval menu will be served at the museum cafe throughout the week.

The opportunity to get close to Waterford’s Bilberry goat population will be available all week. The feral goats have been living on Bilberry Rock overlooking Waterford city for more than 400 years and are said to be the only ones found worldwide.

Every county will host free events during the heritage week and a free event guide was issued yesterday to encourage people to take part.

A commemoration of the world’s first motoring fatality has been organised by the Birr Historical Society for August 29th. Scientist Mary Ward was thought to be the first person to die in a motoring accident when she fell under the wheels of a steam- powered car in Birr in 1869.
