Four people were killed in three separate road crashes this morning.

An woman (18) and a man died in a collision between an articulated lorry and a car on the N59 just outside Mullingar at 8.15 a.m. The accident happened on the Kilbeggan-to-Mullingar stretch of road at Belvedere House, a popular tourist spot.

The driver of the truck was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar.

It was the third fatal crash on the same stretch of road in a month. A young man was killed in the same spot last week.

Superintendent Joe Shelley of Mullingar Garda station appealed for witnesses to this morning's crash.

In an accident in Co Cavan this morning, a man was killed when the truck he was driving hit a ditch at Castletara at 6.30 a.m.

Elsewhere, a female pedestrian in her forties was killed after a collision with a motor cycle at Ballyfermot Road, near the junction of Cherry Orchard Industrial Estate, in Dublin at 9.07 a.m.  The woman was removed to St. James's Hospital.

Gardaí in Ballyfermot have appealed for witnesses.  Anyone with information is asked to contact the station at 01-6667200.

None of those killed this morning has been named. This morning's deaths bring to 248 the number of people killed on Irish roads this year.
