Twelve children drowned yesterday when they were swept away while attempting to cross a flooded stream in eastern India to fetch grass for animal feed.

A group of 16 children attempted to cross a feeder stream of the Koshi river near the village of Gaiyari in Bihar state, but only four survived.

The bodies of nine of the children had so far been recovered, police superintendent Mr Arvind Kumar said.

The children, mostly girls, "were crossing the stream to collect green grasses from the other side when they were swept away," he said.
