ATHENS - Fires raged yesterday on the Aegean islands of Rhodes and Chios, destroying more than 1,000 hectares in less than 12 hours. The fires that broke out on Sunday, fed by strong winds, wreaked the worst havoc in Chios, where 900 hectares of woodland were burned. Fires on Crete were brought under control, but two small villages near Heraklion were evacuated.
