Fire on ferry stops sailing

A fire aboard a passenger ferry in Rosslare forced the cancellation of sailing to Wales yesterday evening. The blaze started in the fridge unit of a truck on the car deck as the Isle of Inisturk ferry was being loaded at around 8.30 p.m. Passengers and crew were immediately evacuated.

Three units of the fire brigade were called but the fire was quickly extinguished. A spokesman for Irish Ferries said the sailing was cancelled for a Department of Marine inspection and they hoped the ferry would sail at 8.30 a.m. this morning. The 40 passengers involved were put on a Stena Sealink ferry to Fishguard.
