Families of the 13 victims of a stampede during a 2002 World Cup qualifier last July will receive $10,000 each from world football governing body FIFA on Saturday.
The spectators died when police fired teargas into the 50,000 crowd after missiles had been flung on the pitch while South Africa celebrated taking a 2-0 lead over Zimbabwe with seven minutes left.
Zimbabwe Football Association spokesman Peter Mukuna said Ismail Bhamjee of Botswana, a FIFA executive committee member and president of the Southern Africa football council, is to make the compensation in the form of cheques. AFP
