"Culture, confidence, children and cash" are four obstacles to women's greater participation in public life, according to the President, Mrs Robinson. However, these problems can be overcome, especially if lessons are drawn from women's participation in voluntary organisations.
A paper on the subject is the first article in the first issue of the Irish Journal of Feminist Studies, launched yesterday at Aras an Uachtarain. Published by Cork University Press, the journal will appear twice yearly.
