WARNINGS ABOUT two separate products – a high chair from Ikea and a Beko fridge-freezer – have been issued to Irish consumers.
The Swedish furniture giant Ikea yesterday recalled a faulty Antilop high chair after it received eight reports of the belt on the chair opening unexpectedly, leading to a risk of falling.
The eight incidents, which took place in the US, Sweden and Japan, resulted in three children suffering minor injuries.
A spokeswoman for the company said 3,386 high chairs had been sold in Ireland, while more than 60,000 had been sold in the UK, some of which may have been bought by customers in Northern Ireland.
Ikea has asked customers who have an Antilop high chair to check its supplier number and production date.
The recall only applies to Antilop high chairs from supplier number 17389 with production dates between July 2006 and November 2009.
Affected customers are asked to immediately contact the Ikea customer service desk on 1890 876707 to receive a replacement belt, without charge.
Meanwhile, household appliance producer Beko yesterday issued a warning to owners of certain brands of its frost-free fridge-freezers that they may cause a fire hazard. It said this was present in a very small number of cases.
It is asking owners of certain frost-free fridge-freezers to contact them immediately as there is a possibility that the defrost timer located at the back of the fridge may fail, causing it to overheat.
Beko is offering customers a free in-home modification to remove any potential risk with this component, which will take about 30 minutes.
“Over 500,000 of these products have been sold and most have been safely in use, some for over 10 years,” the company said in a statement.
“We believe it is still safe to continue using your product until the engineer visits, but please take the same care as you would with any other electrical appliance.”
The Beko frost-free fridge-freezer models affected were manufactured between January 2000 and October 2006.
These have serial numbers that begin with either 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05 or 06. This information can be found on a label inside the fridge.
A list of affected product model numbers can be found at beko.co.uk.
Beko cautioned owners of affected models that develop a fault to unplug the device immediately and contact the company on 1800 25 29 25.
