Brussels - The far-right Flemish separatist and anti-immigration party Vlaams Blok surged ahead in municipal elections in Belgium's second largest city of Antwerp yesterday, getting 33 per cent of the votes, according to official results broadcast by VRT television.

The Vlaams Blok, or "Flemish bloc", picked up three more seats on the 55-seat Antwerp City Council, bringing its total from 18 to 21. The incumbent five-party coalition slipped from 37 to 34 seats.
