An action by the family of a baby girl who died six days after birth at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin has been settled at the High Court.

It was claimed that Alena Dunne died of injuries suffered as a result of alleged negligence regarding her birth in April 2006. The hospital denied the claims. Suzanne Dunne (37), Castlemoyne, Balgriffin, Dublin, brought the proceedings on behalf of herself and her family. Bruce Antoniotti SC, for the family, told Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O’Neill the case had settled on terms including payment of the maximum amount, about €25,000, payable for mental distress arising from a fatal injury, plus expenses. The judge approved the settlement.
