Road deaths in Northern Ireland fell by 8 per cent to 144 last year, the RUC said yesterday.
In the Republic 41 people were killed in road accidents last month and 1,032 were injured, according to provisional Garda statistics issued yesterday.
The figures bring the total number of deaths in road accidents in the Republic during the first seven months of 1996 to 238, with 5,907 injuries.
Over the August bank holiday six people were killed and 140 injured. In the same period last year, five people were killed and 125 injured on the road.
