Two explosions were heard in a northern Tehran today, near a number of military and security bases, Iran's student news agency ISNA reported.

It said the blasts had occurred around midday north of Vanak square, a crowded commercial district. ISNA gave no more details and there was no immediate official reaction.

Iran on Saturday marked the anniversary of its 1979 Islamic revolution, a day marked by political tension and protests.

The People's Mujahideen, Iran's main armed opposition group, based in Iraq, has claimed a series of attacks in recent days.

The Vanak area, home to a base of the elite Revolutionary Guards, the national police headquarters and several military installations, has been a frequent target of rebel attacks in the past.

In statements sent to Reuters in Dubai, the Mujahideen claimed responsibility for two explosions in the area on Thursday.

The group says it has also carried out a series of bomb attacks in western regions near the border with Iraq in a campaign to overshaddow the official revolution celebrations.
