A Co Westmeath man was killed when the fuel tank in his car exploded after the vehicle struck a wall at Carownkavey, Ballinacarrow, Co Sligo, in the early hours of yesterday morning. The man, who was single and in his sixties, is believed to be from the Castletowngeoghegan area.

Talks are to resume in the Dunnes Stores dispute this morning. Unions and management met for three hours yesterday afternoon. The discussions are understood to have centred on new disputes procedures for the company.

Today's talks are expected to be aimed at a major breakthrough as time is rapidly running out for a resolution of the issues before next Monday's strike deadline.
